Namak pare is a crunchy savoury snack of India and Pakistan. They serve as an excellent tea-time snacks and are also made during holi, diwali and other festivals.
Namak Para is an easy recipe to prepare at home. So, lets begin to make namak pare in simple steps.
Ingredients
Maida (All purpose flour) - 1 cup
Semolina - 2 tbsp
Carom seeds/ajwain - 1 tsp
Black Pepper (crushed) - 1tsp
Oil or Ghee (for mixing in flour) - 2-3 tbsp
Salt to taste
Oil for frying
Method
- Sieve the maida and semolina in a bowl.
- Add salt, black pepper and carom seeds in it.
- Add the oil or ghee. Then, add water (add little water at a time) and knead a soft but firm dough.
- Cover the dough with a moist cloth and leave it for 15-20 minutes.
- After 15-20 minutes, remove the cloth from the dough and divide it into two or three equal portions.
- Now, take a dough ball, flatten it a little using your palms.
- On rolling board, roll the dough with the help of rolling pin in a big round shape of 9-10 inch diameter.
- Make criss-cross patterns on the rolled dough using a sharp knife.
- Now heat oil in a kadhai/wok on medium flame, then, add few pieces of namak pare in the oil. Make sure, not to overcrowd them, otherwise it would be difficult to fry them properly.
- Fry the namak pare from both sides till it becomes crisp and golden brown.
- Drain the namak pare on absorbent paper so as to remove excess oil.
- Let it cool down, then store it in an air-tight container.
- You can store it for 3-4 weeks in an air-tight container at room temperature.
- Whenever you want to eat them, just take it out from the container and serve with hot ginger tea or coffee.
Notes:
- You can also bake the namak pare.
- For baking the namak pare, preheat the oven to 180 degree C.
- Place the pieces of namak pare on a greased baking tray and bake it for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
